Roseate Spoonbill Patch
#83 Roseate Spoonbill Patch
The aptly named Roseate Spoonbill is a large, bright pink wading bird with a partly bald head and a long bill that widens at the tip. It forages in groups in shallow fresh and saltwater, sweeping up crustaceans and fish. Carotenoid pigments in its prey give it its pink color. One of six spoonbill species worldwide, it’s the only one found in the Western Hemisphere, ranging from the southeastern U.S. to South America.
